Chichen-Itza in Mayan means ´At the mouth of the Itzaes’ well´. The Itzaes were the Mayan group that inhabited this area and the word means “Sorcerer”. This magnificent archaeological site is considered the greatest, most powerful-and certainly the most cosmopolitan-city in Mayan history.

Witness the majestic buildings, precise distribution of space and complex symbolism of sculptures and relieves found in Chichen-Itza.
The Kukulcan Pyramid (Kukulcan – the plumed serpent), named “El Castillo” by the Spaniards, was built to serve as a tomb to the ruling Mayan King and to honor the Kukulcan (the sun) god.
Therefore, the architect constructed it as giant clock, the seasons, the months and the days of the year are represented in its staircases and layers.
Every equinox, several thousands of people from all over the world come to witness the serpent of light projected by the sun over one pyramid corner to the next stair case, connecting to the stone serpent head on the bottom, representing the Kukulcan god descending to the earth to fertilize it.
This pyramid is one of the strongest candidates to be appointed as one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World”.
At this special site you will find other amazing buildings, such as; the Astronomical Observatory or the Snail, the Ball Game Court, the Quadrangle of the Nuns, the Thousand Worriers and many more. A “real must see” site.
