About Cozumel

From the Mayan word "Cozumil" means swallow (a small native bird to the island). It is the largest island within Mexico. Inhabited by the Mayans for over 2,000 years, it was an important port for both, religion and commerce. San Gervasio archaeological site was Ixchel Sanctuary, goddess for pregnant women, medicine and the moon-supreme creator. This site was inhabited until the Spanish occupation.
