Tulum means "Wall" in Mayan, this name was given by the later Mayan people living in the surrounding area. This beautiful site is the only walled city in the Mayan culture ever built on the Caribbean coast (over a cliff). It was the first building spotted in Mexico and continental America by the Spaniards.

Even though this is rather a small site in size, it is considered quite important since it was erected during the Mayan post-classic period to worship ¨Zama¨ (Dawn in Mayan and original name of the site), Zama was the "New fire god" or the "Rising sun god", referring to "Kukulcan" (the plumed serpent).
At Tulum you can also appreciate the famous Mayan un-lead construction style; it also was an important trading port.
